Problem Solved
The extensive reliance on petroleum-based plastics has led to severe environmental challenges due to their non-biodegradable nature. These plastics persist in the environment for hundreds to thousands of years, polluting land, rivers, and oceans. Plastic packaging—widely used in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries—is a major contributor, taking over 400 years to decompose.
Although Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) and other bio-polymers offer sustainable alternatives, their production currently relies on food crops like corn, sugarcane, and wheat. This raises ethical and environmental concerns due to competition with food and energy resources. Moreover, the manufacturing processes for these bioplastics often produce toxic waste and carbon emissions, undermining their sustainability.
Despite their promise, bioplastics make up less than 1% of global plastic production, and their biodegradability is limited—often requiring controlled environments to degrade effectively. This highlights a clear need for truly biodegradable packaging materials that decompose naturally under common environmental conditions.
Compounding the issue, millions of tons of agricultural waste are generated annually and are frequently burned, releasing greenhouse gases and exacerbating climate change. The plastics industry acknowledges the urgency to reduce environmental harm, yet innovation in sourcing and producing biodegradable films remains insufficient.
There is an urgent need for alternative materials that are biodegradable, non-toxic, and resource-efficient—without compromising environmental integrity or competing with food systems.
